Welcome

VDI Coach is here to provide real world VDI and technology discussions on topics that often are overlooked or over simplified.

Often decision makers within an organization have to rely on the visibility and expertise of others to make an informed choices. Our goal is to help fill this gap and provide tools for teams to communicate on the same level.

Setting the foundation for success in IT

To really get the most of of the articles its critical that you have an understanding of what success means in IT. Sometimes not doing something can be just as much of a success as doing something. If you are a seasoned IT professional feel free to skip ahead to the good stuff, below may be really boring.

IT Fundamentals

Before digging into the articles here it is critical to have a good understanding of how to be successful in IT. In my experience whether you run in a project, project or service model, whether your organization runs in a waterfall, agile, lean or ideally some combination (more on that later) there are some key fundamentals that are critical to success.

Successful implementations are broken down at a high level to three key phases skipping or shortcutting any one of these is a recipe for disaster.

Plan and Design

Included in Plan and Design phase you will do more than just architect a solution. You need to understand the business wants and needs, how to translate these into a solution. Planning should also include areas for how the solution will be adopted and planning for day 2 operations.

Build and Test

This area seems really simple based on the name but sadly represents a large percentage for where “time saving” occurs. In addition to building, install and configurations building your solution into your IT process is critical. While it should never need to be said please make sure you test before someone else finds your undocumented “features”.

Adopt, Run and Improve

Once you have deployed your solution its critical that there is a plan for driving adoption, this can be a plan to grow, restrict or maintain but without a plan there is no chance to know if you are doing the right thing. Ensuring that you have a good user experience and that you take the feedback and improve is also critical to overall success.
